SATURDAY UPDATE: Canyon Fire 2 Is 70% Contained; 241 Fwy Open; Assistance Center Opens

UPDATED 11:30AM SATURDAY, OCT 14:

The Canyon Fire 2 burning in Orange County is now 70% contained, with burned acreage still holding at 9,217 acres.  Good progress on containing the fire over the past few days has been aided by favorable weather, and full containment of the blaze is projected for Tuesday.  However fire authorities are still concerned about a forecast of warmer, windier conditions returning today (Saturday) that could whip up flames again.

Yesterday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the area: Moderate Santa Ana winds were expected to create “critical fire weather” conditions for 24 hours, beginning Saturday morning, Oct. 14, and lasting through 12:00 noon Sunday, Oct. 15.

As of this morning (Saturday) there are now just under 1,000 fire personnel fighting Canyon Fire 2, aided by 64 fire engines, 6 water tenders, 8 bulldozers, and 2 helicopters.

The 241 toll freeway between the 91 freeway and Santiago Canyon Road is back open to traffic.  The Orange County Register reports that early Friday, southbound lanes of the 241 toll road from the 91 freeway to the Santiago Canyon/Chapman exit reopened; the fire had damaged infrastructure. But the right lane remained closed for all cars except emergency vehicles, with motorists asked to drive slowly and keep on the lookout for fire crews. And the off-ramp to Santiago Canyon Road remained closed, along with the on-ramp from Santiago Canyon to the northbound 241. The northbound toll road opened later Friday.

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
