Funeral services have been set for the second week of January for Riverside County Supervisor John Benoit. Benoit died Monday night of complications from pancreatic cancer, one day before his 65th birthday.
Benoit’s funeral mass will be on Tuesday, January 10, at 10 a.m. at Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in the Coachella Valley community of La Quinta. There will be a public viewing at the church on Monday, January 9, at 6:30 p.m., the night before the funeral.
Benoit represented Riverside County’s 4th Supervisor District, which stretches from the Coachella Valley to the Arizona border, from 2009 until his death. Before that, he had a long career in law enforcement, and served in the California Legislature before serving on the Riverside County Board of Supervisors.
Governor Jerry Brown has the responsibility to appoint Benoit’s successor. This will be the second time Brown has appointed a Riverside County Supervisor. In 2015, the Governor appointed former Temecula City Councilmember Chuck Washington to replace Supervisor Jeff Stone after Stone won election to the California state Senate.
