9:30AM WED. UPDATE: Canyon Fire Now 20% Contained, 2,000 Acres Burned, Evacuations Still In Effect

Long Beach Fire Department via Cal Fire Twitter

9:30am WEDNESDAY UPDATE:

Favorable weather conditions from yesterday overnight into today (Wednesday) have allowed firefighters to make good progress on the Canyon Fire, burning in the Corona foothills south of the 91 freeway.

As of this morning, authorities say the blaze has been held to 2,000 acres burned, and is now up to 20% containment.  Most of the blaze has been extinguished, but firefighters are still working on isolated patches still burning, and are on the watch for flare-ups.

Mandatory evacuation orders are still in effect this morning (Wednesday). Incident command authorities say they want to establish a bigger containment line around the blaze before letting residents return to the approximately 600 homes in the evacuation zone, which is southwest of Green River Road and Foothill Parkway from the 91 freeway to Trudy Way near the Skyline Drive area.

The following audio story was aired at 8:30am this morning (Wednesday):

Ken Vincent has retired. We appreciate the way he shared his expertise with many of our young interns and reporters over the nearly eight years he spent as KVCR's lead journalist and Morning Edition host. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement as he spends more time in his garden and, as he mentioned, more time on the golf course. Thanks Ken!
